Lithophanes: The Complete Guide

What lithophanes are, how they're made, and how to turn your favorite photo into a glowing keepsake.

What is a lithophane?

A lithophane is a thin panel — usually 3D printed — that looks plain and pale under normal light, then reveals a detailed image the moment light shines through it from behind. The trick is thickness: dark areas of the photo are printed thicker so they block more light, while highlights are printed thinner so they glow.

How we make them

We convert your photo to a high-resolution grayscale heightmap, dial in contrast so faces and edges read clearly, then 3D print the panel at fine layer heights on our printers. Every lithophane is test-lit before it leaves the shop.

Choosing a photo that works

  • Bright, even lighting on the subject — no harsh shadows across faces.
  • One clear subject, ideally filling most of the frame.
  • High resolution — at least 1000 x 1000 pixels.
  • Original files beat screenshots or social-media re-downloads.
  • Skip heavy filters and beauty-mode smoothing — they flatten the tonal range we need.

Sizes and formats

We offer flat panels, framed displays, LED bases, night-light inserts, and multi-panel lamps. Most customers start with a 4 x 6 framed lithophane — large enough to show detail, small enough to live on a desk or shelf.

Lighting your lithophane

Lithophanes only come alive when backlit. An LED base or built-in frame light works year-round; a sunny window is a free alternative during the day. Avoid hot bulbs touching the print directly.

Care and longevity

Treat your lithophane like a framed photo: dust gently with a soft, dry cloth, keep it out of direct heat (no dishwashers, no car dashboards in summer), and it will look great for years.
